Real excitement and joy in Australia and the South Pacific

by ervte

“What is life about?” was the question that churches across Australia answered in their communities this Easter when they participated in the Jesus of the Bible Society all About Life campaign.

The campaign, facilitated by Bible Society Australia (BSA), was owned and led by the individual churches that signed up. Nearly 1,000 churches and individuals from across Australia and denominations participated in various ways, asking their communities to consider whether there is more to life and, in particular, to feel the fullness of life that Jesus offers.Real excitement and joy in Australia and the South Pacific

The campaign expressed hope in the fatigue and fatigue many felt after more than two years of the COVID pandemic. With Easter came the opportunity to celebrate life and the eternal hope that Jesus offers, enshrined in the campaign’s core text: “I came to have life, and to have it to the fullest.” (John 10:10b NIV)

One of the primary intents of the campaign was BSA’s desire to encourage and refresh ministry leaders and congregations in providing ministry resources, including the recently published New Beginnings Bible, of which more has been done to date. Than 2,000 have been ordered. Churches that signed up for the campaign were given access to various resources to help organize Easter services for their local communities.

“I ordered copies of Dave the Donkey & Easter children’s books and bookmarks to give to churches in our diocese,” one church leader told me.

“I was lucky enough to be at three small churches to distribute the books directly to the children there. It was a privilege to see their joy in receiving a gift. These small churches have benefited from receiving and giving these gifts for free.”

Another church representative said, “We made Easter weekend invitation cards with the design on offer and hosted a wonderful community engagement event. So many local moms, dads, and families were blessed to have created something beautiful for them. Meaningful conversations were sharing the gospel. Was shared throughout the day, and some led to the rescue.”

The campaign was large-scale, with students at Nungalinya College in Darwin receiving resources and posters featuring Bible verses in multiple native languages developed during the campaign. Louise Sherman from BSA’s Remote and Indigenous Ministries team said: “Director Ben Van Gelderen told all the students about the posters, which ‘went like hot cakes. The students were instructed to return the posters to their community in the best language that appealed to them. We pray these will bless these language communities and open the door to further Bible translation work into more languages.”

In imitation of Jesus. The All About Life campaign is the fiscal year-end Bible Association’s appeal, focusing on Opening the Bible with Your Neighbor. Bible Society is pleased to announce the Oceania Alliance, a partnership between Bible Society Australia, Bible Society South Pacific, and Bible Society Papua New Guinea. This alliance will strengthen the work of the Bible Society in the Pacific, share resources among Bible societies, collaborate on Bible translation and engagement projects, and build the capacity of each Bible society.

Geoffry Miller, the secretary general of Bible Society South Pacific, said, “We are grateful for the partnership because we believe that working together will make us stronger in the future, but not only that, we have the confidence to help the people that exist in our communities and churches.”

Bible Society of the South Pacific also led Jesus. All About Life campaign in their communities in Fiji: for them, the campaign was an opportunity to remind their communities of the pandemic and all the suffering it brought.

“God sees you, cares about you, wants to travel with you through what you face and bring out the best in you.”

Churches around Fiji were supported with the same resources as Australian churches, encouraged by the revitalizing message of Easter. They provided a platform where all churches could work together, worship together, and find strength as the body of Christ.

The culmination and focus of the campaign in Fiji was the two-night production, He Sees You, which saw a packed house both nights, with over 1,400 in attendance and a live stream audience of 3,200. Volunteers walked around the evening: 150 young people from all Christian churches in the country.

“The Jesus. The All About Life campaign has motivated us as churches and brought us together for two years,” says Geoffry. “This has probably been the biggest post-COVID event for Fiji, especially for the Church. We saw young people of different denominations working together… and that was a real excitement and a joy for myself and the Bible Society.”
